The high altitude of Quito 9,400 feet (2,850 m.) above sea level, where most overseas flights arrive, may affect the health of some citizens due to lack of plenty of oxygen in its atmosphere. It is recommended to visit their local health provider previous a vacation trip for advise regarding vaccines as well as other health issues. Most of the Health care in Ecuador is provided free by the Social Security Health Insurance to all its federal and state employees. This includes medical assistance at outpatient clinics and hospitalization, as well as medical prescriptions, optometry and dental services. Social Security offices are located in many cities of the country. People with no income and no Social Security Health Insurance, and no health care provider, can have free medical assistance from Hospitals maintained by the Ministry of Health, exclusively for the people with no means to take care on their own health.
Non-government employees can obtain medical services from Social Security Insurance, provided they meet the monthly payment requirement established by the laws of Ecuador.
Some private corporations have their own medical staff and hospitals, and are therefore able to provide medical services, including hospitalization, to their employees.
